Eight activists of the Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League’s associate body of students, were on Thursday injured in a factional clash on the Rajshashi University campus. Campus sources said followers of the faction led by the university unit Chhatra League president Awal Kabir Joy beat up Abdul Jabed, a fourth-year accounting student suspecting him to be a Shibir activist near Rabindra Arts Building about 1.30pm. As the followers of the university unit Chhatra League general secretary Majedul Islam Opu protested at the attack, their rivals attacked them, in which fourth-year Arabic student Ratan was injured. Immediately after the incident, followers of the faction led by the unit’s general secretary, equipped with iron rods and hockey sticks, attacked the supporters the faction led by the unit president, in which Arifur Rahman, Jewel, Delwar Hossain, Nazmul and Nayan were injured. The injured were admitted to university medical centre. After the incident, supporters of both the factions, equipped with iron rods, hockey sticks and firearms, stood guard on the campus which panicked general students and teachers. The university proctorial body, led by the proctor, Chowdhury Mohammad Zakaria, along with law enforcers, reached the spot and controlled the situation. The police also seized hockey sticks, iron rods and a knife from the supporters of the faction led by the unit secretary. The law enforcers, along with the university authorities, raided the rooms of the supporters of the faction led by the unit president in the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Sher-e-Bangla Hall. Nothing could be seized and no one could be arrested, the sources said. Mazedul Islam later alleged the supporters of the faction led by the unit president had attacked his supporters as they protested at the assault of a student for a trifle matter. The university unit president brushed aside the allegations and claimed the people of the faction led by the secretary had first attacked his supporters. The proctor said police deployment had been reinforced to stave off further trouble. http://www.newagebd.com/2010/mar/19/front.html#1
