Jessore BCL leader killed in infighting Jessore A Chhatra League leader was hacked to death allegedly by the activist of his rival faction at Bhekutia Bazar, on the outskirts of the Jessore town, on Sunday evening. The deceased was Ripon Hossain, 28, convener of the town unit Bangladesh Chhatra League. He was a candidate for the presidency of the town unit Chhatra League, associate body of students of the ruling Awami League. He was hacked to death after clashes had taken place between the rival factions of the Chhatra League unit on Saturday night. Ripon, a supporter of former lawmaker Ali Reza Raju, came to be attacked when he was riding a motorcycle at Bhekutia Bazar about 6:30pm on Sunday. He died on the spot. Several hundred people rushed to Jessore General Hospital at night as the news spread. His father Shahidul Islam said, ‘What will you do? Nothing happened to my son when the BNP was in power. Now that the Awami League is in power, my son got killed?’ Tension mounted in the district headquarters after the gunfight between the rival factions of the Chhatra League on Saturday night. The groups started clashes about 8:00pm when the elections to the district unit Chhatra League were going on. At least 20 activists and leaders of the Chhatra League were injured in the clashes after the district council session of the organisation on Saturday night. Both the groups traded gunshots and exploded bombs. Juba League activist Milan and Chhatra League activists Faruq, Saju, Joy and some others were injured. Two panels — one supported by the Jessore unit Awami League president Ali Reza Raju and the other supported by lawmaker Khaledur Rahman Tito — were contesting the polls.
