Chandpur BCL factions clash, go on rampage

The clash followed failure to secure a berth in the central committee of the pro-ruling party student body.Two rival factions of BCL yesterday locked in a fierce clash and ransacked shops and other establishments in the district town.

The rampage started around 10:00pm on Monday and continued till midnight spreading panic in the town.

According to witnesses, over 100 youths of the feuding factions equipped with lethal weapons vandalised shops, business firms and CNG-run three-wheelers-whatever came their way.

Supporters of BCL leader Abdul Kader Jilani allegedly attacked the house of former president of the organisation's district unit and income tax lawyer Zahidul Islam Roman in front of Natun Bazar police outpost at Adalatpara.

Jilani said Roman had pledged to manage for him either the post of BCL general secretary or a position in the central committee but he did not keep the promise.

The former president of BCL district unit, however, said some unruly men went on the rampage. He condemned the incident and said that the matter has been brought to the notice of senior leaders of district Awami League.

Chandpur district BCL leader Sheikh Abdul Motaleb said the district unit had recommended some Chhatra League leaders including Jilani and Robin for positions in the central committee. The 220-member BCL central committee was announced on Monday night but the local BCL leaders is were not included in the committee, he said. The district leaders did not have any hand in this matter, he added.

Chandpur Sadar Model police station officer In-charge Md Alamgir Hossain Majumder said additional police personnel have been deployed at different points of the town.
