Clash with Police in Thakurgaon

At least 87 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists were sued by police on Saturday night in connection with the clash between police and a group of BCL men on Friday night.

Police detained 11BCL activists early yesterday in an overnight drive in different areas of the town in connection with the clash and vandalising of Awami League party office.

The officer in-charge of Thakurgaon police station said, after examining video footage of the incident, police arrested four BCL activists and produced them before the chief judicial magistrate court yesterday afternoon. The court sent them to the jail.

The rest seven detainees were freed as they were found not involved with the incident.

Five people including four policemen were injured in a clash between police and BCL men on Friday night at Thakurgaon intersection.

The BCL activists also blocked the main road after vandalising district Awami League office to protest a move to arrest one of their former leaders over extortion charges.

Police fired 25 teargas shells and 20 rubber bullets to disperse the BCL activists.

The extortion case was filed against five BCL leaders including former organising secretary of district unit BCL Mohammad Mamun on 15 October by a private farm.

BCL leaders claimed that the case was false and demanded its withdrawal.
