BCL threatens DU students for not joining programme

Activists of of a Dhaka University hall unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, on Tuesday night threatened some students for not joining their political programmes.

Some 25 to 30 Chhatra League activists of the Zahurul Haque Hall unit, led by Ruhani and Shams, gave the students, residents of Room 2005 in the extension

building of the hall, two days to decide on joining them, the students alleged. The Chhatra League group told them that they would need to leave the hall if they refused to join the organisation’s political programme, the students added.

Other students said that the activists who gave the threat were loyal to Chhatra League leader Tanzil Bhuiyan Tanvir, who is backed by the organisation’s hall unit president Riaz Uddin Chowdhury Sumon.

The university unit Chhatra League’s general secretary Omar Sharif, also a resident of the hall, said that he was busy with other programmes and was not aware of any such incident.

The provost, Abu Md Delwar Hossain, said that the the students had not informed him of the matter, fearing backlash. He said that he would take action if he received complaints.

The hall unit Chhatra League president said that he would look into the matter.
