Two Jamaat Activists murdered in Chittagong

Edit Date:9/21/2011 12:00:00 AM

Govt. silent to the Crimes of Party cadres

Bangladesh has observed several painful incidences of the repression of the ruling party against Islamic Parties of the country. Especially, the vandalism and brutality of the terrorists and local miscreants of the ruling party Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) is exceeding all limits. The latest incident of murder of two Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leaders on the eve of holy Eid-ul-Fitr is nothing short of utmost viciousness.

What happened that day?

The incident took place on Satkania, Chittagong where Abdul Hakim (39) and Kamal Uddin (34) were murdered by the gang of local Awami League leader and terrorist Bashir on 2nd September, 2011 Friday at night. According to the family members and friends, both the victims were returning from a program of their friend Rafiq’s residence while they were kidnapped by Bashir and his gang of 15-20 members. Later, slaughtered dead body of Abdul Hakim was found in a canal called “Hatiar Bil” connected with river Dalu in Satkania at Saturday. After one day, bullet pierced dead body of Kamal uddin was also found from river Dalu.[1]

Ameer (President) of Jamaat-e-Islami Satkania upazila Dr. Nurul Haq said that, Abdul Hakim owned and possessed a garden with valuable trees. After the Awami League govt. took power in 2008, Local BAL terrorist Bashir harassed Abdul Hakim and threatened to take over the garden. He forcefully cut down some trees from the garden which led to a strong dispute between Bashir and Abdul Hakim. Following the dispute, Bashir with the help of his friends killed Abdul Hakim and his fellow Kamal Uddin.[2]

However, leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Chittagong city and districts condemned their deep shock to such brutal act of terrorism and demanded immediate arrest of Bashir and other identified terrorist who murdered those two Jamaat workers. The Member of Parliament from Satkania-Lohagara constituency and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Chittagong City Mawlana Shamsul Islam said that, “No human being can kill a person on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr, only beasts can do that. The peaceful environment of Satkania is being tried to be violated by such nasty works.” Local leaders also strongly demanded the arrest of the culprits as soon as possible.[3]

The Namaz-i-Zanaza of Abdul Hakim was held thrice in different places. More than thirty thousand people attended those prayers. Veteran Jamaat leader Prof. Dr. Mofizur Rahman and Mawlana Shamsul Islam led the Zanaza prayers and afterwards, the bereaved was buried at his family graveyard. Younger brother of Abdul Hakim later filed a case against Bashir and his 17 associates with charges of Murder at Satkania Thana.

Jamaat-e-Islami Chittagong City organized an agitation program on September 7 demanding arrest and trial of the criminals who murdered the Jamaat workers. They alleged that not arresting the convicted even after one week clearly indicates that the govt. is now backing up the terrorists and trying to save them. They declared that Strikes would be called if govt. continued to show such negligence.[4]

After more than two and a half years, current government seems to have diverged from its promise to the people of Bangladesh. The extrajudicial killings, killings in police custody and not to mention brutal killing by the ruling party cadres shocked the people of Bangladesh who brought Awami League into power hoping a change in the political practices. Truth be told, people no more want Bangladesh to be a ‘Sonar Bangla’, rather, they want the right to have a normal death, the freedom to express what is right. The growing number of killing, arson, rape and extreme intolerance to opposition parties has threatened the image of Bangladesh as a moderate democratic Muslim country to its core. It is high time Government assess their performance and create an atmosphere where everyone has the freedom to enjoy their rights safeguarded by constitution.
