80 injured: BCL infighting at DU

Dhaka, Apr 26 (UNB)- Around 80 students were injured in a factional clash of Bangladesh Chhatra League(BCL) at Haji Mohammad Mahsin Hall on Dhaka University campus early Tuesday.

Campus sources said the clash erupted over capturing seat in the dormitory and establishing supremacy at about 4:30 am.

Police sources said two groups of BCL Mohsin hall unit locked into clashes with sharp and lethal weapons that left around 80 students wounded.

Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control after one and a half hours.

The unruly students also vandalized glasses and furniture inside the hall.

Officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station Rezaul Karim said the situation is now under control.

Hospital sources said nearly 65 students were given first aid at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Three of the injured were admitted to the same hospital while another was rushed to Pangu Hospital.

The activities of Chhatra League hall committee were suspended for indefinite period following the incident.

Mohammad Ali, Chhatra League President of Mohsin Hall was permanently suspended while 10 others were temporarily suspended, said DU correspondent.

A three-member committee was formed to investigate into the matter which was headed by Abu Taleb, a residential tutor of the hall and the committee has been asked to submit its reports within seven days.

A huge contingent of police has been deployed at different strategic points on the campus to avert any untoward incident.

A tense situation has been prevailing on the campus.
