Three activists of Juba League, the ruling Awami League’s associate body of the youth, died in pre-polls infighting on Tuesday night.
The deceased were Bazlur Rahman, 40, of Bhutiargati, Alamgir Hossain Alam, 35, of Pabhati, and Sohan, also known as Sohag, 27.
Local people said that the faction of the organisation known as Jahangir Group had clashed with the faction known as the Masud Group the Pabhat crossing in the town about 7:30pm.
The superintendent of police of Jhenaidah, Mohammad Rezaul Karim, said that both the groups had a long-standing dispute between them.
Before the municipal polls scheduled for January 13, the Masud group extended their support for the
councillor candidate Jahidul Islam while the Jahangir Group supported the other commissioner candidate, Akhter Hossain.
Bazlur, Alamgir and Sohan were seriously injured in the clash as they were chopped with sharp weapons. Bazlur and Alamgir died on their way to Jhenaidah General Hospital and Sohan died on his way to Dhaka.
Additional policemen have been deployed in Jhenaidah to fend off any untoward incident.
In separate incidents on Tuesday night, at least 10 supporters of the rebel Awami League candidate Azam were hurt in pre-polls clashes in the Sailkupa municipality in the district.
