A Union Parishad (UP) member was shot dead by armed criminals at his house at Arachharimukh village in Gayinda union of Rajasthali upazila on Monday night.

United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), an anti-peace-treaty organisation, in a press release blamed the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) for the killing.

They also claimed the dead UP member as a supporter of UPDF.

The deceased was identified as Sugondhi Tangchangya, 45, son of Suranjan Tangchangya of Arachharimukh.

Sugondhi was a member of ward no 6 of the union, Rajasthali police said.

A group of armed criminals came at about 9:00pm and asked the victim to come out of his house.

As soon as Sugondhi came out of the house, the criminals sprayed bullets on him, leaving him dead on the spot, police said.

“We recovered the body from the spot in the [yesterday] morning and sent it to Rangamati General Hospital for autopsy,” said Rezaul Haque, officer in-charge of Rajasthali Police Station.

“We are trying to find out the reason behind the killing,” he added.

Shantideb Chakma, coordinator of Rangamati district unit of UPDF, yesterday in a press release blamed the PCJSS for the killing.

He also demanded immediate arrest of the killers.

Sajib Chakma, assistant information and publicity secretary of PCJSS, central committee, yesterday denied the allegation.

It might have occurred due to internal feud of UPDF, he alleged.
