The Khulna city and district units of the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council and Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad formed a human chain in the Picture Palace crossing in Khulna on Saturday morning in protest at Awami League lawmaker Sohrab Ali Sana’s alleged attempt at having a man accused in the case of killing a religious minority man released.
The city unit Oikya Parishad president, Amiya Sarkar Gora, presided over the hour-long gathering beginning about 11:30am. Bijoy Ghosh, Ratan Mitra, Sushil Shikder, Shyamal Das and Krishna Pada Das spoke.
The speakers said assailants beat up a minority community member Subodh Sardar at Bhagba of Koyra in Khulna on November 5, 2010 and he died on November 16, 2007.
The victim’s brother Dinabandhu Sardar lodged a case with the Koyra police accusing six people, including Maheshwaripur union council chairman Shahabuddin Mollah, who is also a local Awami League leader.
After investigation, the police pressed charges in the case making Shahabuddin No 2 accused the next year and the trial is going on, the speakers said. The deposition of nine witnesses has already been recorded.
The speakers alleged Sohrab Ali Sana, Awami League leader who has been elected lawmaker for the Khulna 6 constituency, and the Koyra upazila council chairman GM Mohsin Reza, also the Koyra unit Awami League’s general secretary, tried to save Shahabuddin saying that the case had been filed out of political motives. They said Subodh was a village farmer and it was a plain murder case.
They demanded that the government should not drop charges against Shahabuddin and release him and should take steps against the lawmaker and the upazila council chairman for their attempts to pass off the case as ‘political.’
