Crackdown on Jamaat, Shibir men: over 100 including Rajshahi city ameer arrested: 2 Shibir activists killed in C'Nawabganj, Chittagong.

 The Government has launched a combing operation across the country to arrest Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists and so far police have arrested 100 of its activists including Ataur Rahman, Rajshahi city Ameer of Jamaat in connection with Tuesday's violence at Rajshahi University (RU). 

Shamsul Haque Tuku State Minister for Home disclosed yesterday after a special meeting with heads of the law enforcement agencies at the Home Ministry. 

The meeting was convened in the backdrop of Tuesday's violence at the Rajshahi University and the killing of Faruk Hossain, a final year student of the University's Mathematics Department.

The State Minister said, "A combing operation has been launched in the northern region and other places of the country which are known as strongholds of Chhatra Shibir. Shibir activists were involving in criminal activities", he added. Tuku said the law enforcers would continue the operation across the country wherever the Shibir has strongholds. The meeting was presided over by Home Minister Sahara Khatun where chiefs of law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies were also present.

Police arrested Ataur Rahman, Rajshahi city Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and also an assistant headmaster of Loknath High School in the city, around 10:15 AM when he was going to the school. Boalia police chief Jasimuddin, led the operation. 

He was arrested for his alleged involvement in the RU clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wings of ruling Awami League and Jamaat respectively, that left one BCL activist dead and hundred others injured.

A joint team comprising Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police personnel picked up around 55 Shibir men raiding Rajshahi University, its adjacent areas including Binodpur, Meherchandi, Budpara and other areas of Rajshahi city and surrounding districts.

Police said the arrestees include two named in the first information report--Hasmat Ali Liton, President of Abdul Latif Hall Shibir unit, and Abdur Razzak, General Secretary of the dormitory unit of Shibir. They were arrested at private students' messes in the city.

Police yesterday arrested a cadre of Islami Chhatra Shibir in connection with the killing of Rajshahi University student and Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Faruk Hossain at a remote village of Tarash upazila in Sirajganj.

Arrested Mokhlesur Rahman Mokhles, son of Mizanur Rahman alias Moznu Sarder of the village of Kundoil and an honours final year student of Chemistry Department at RU, is accused in Faruk killing case. 

In primary interrogation by police, Mokhles also confessed his involvement in the RU violence on Monday night.

Police and BCL Rajshahi University unit general secretary on Wednesday filed two cases accusing around 600 Shibir activists in connection with the RU violence.

Rajshahi University Chhatra League General Secretary Majedul Islam Opu and Motihar Police Station Sub-Inspector Ershadul Alam filed two murder cases with Motihar Police Station in connection with the killing of BCL worker Faruk Hossain. 

Rajshahi University Shibir President Shamsul Alam Golap and General Secretary Mobarak Hossain were accused in both the cases.

Faruk was hacked to death by cadres of Shibir in an overnight attack on different Rajshahi University dormitories. Students said Shibir men captured eight dormitories, which were dominated by Chhatra League.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police suspended a sub-inspector yesterday, suspension of eight policemen in connection with negligence of their duties during Tuesday's violence on Rajshahi University campus.

Suspended sub-inspector Anwar Hossain Babu was second officer of the Motihar Police Station, confirmed a source of RMP adding that he was closed to Rajshahi Police Lines. The eight policemen, who were suspended on Wednesday, are: Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohsin Alam of RMP Detective Branch, Nayek Al Mamun, constables Naimul Haque, Arifur Rahman, Ishaq Ali, Monwarul Islam, Akkas Ali and Khairul Bashar of riot police department.

Meanwhile, Police yesterday recovered the bullet-hit body of an Islami Chhatra Shibir activist, who was accused in Tuesday's Rajshahi University violence, from Chaitannyapur village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.

The deceased was identified as Hafizur Rahman Shahin, 25, of Meherchandi area in Rajshahi town. 

Shahin was accused in one of the two cases filed by Bangladesh Chhatra League early Wednesday in connection with killing a BCL worker at Rajshahi University early Tuesday.

A party office of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami came under attack and was vandalized by the activists of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League at Zianagar upazila in Pirojpur yesterday.

Local sources said activists of two front organizations of ruling Awami League brought out a joint procession in the upazila headquarters protesting the attack on BCL activists in Rajshahi.

At one stage, they swooped on upazila Jamaat office at upazila sadar road and damaged its chairs, door and other valuables at about 1:30pm.None, however, was present at the office during the attack.

Five journalists were injured in beating by some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on the violence-ridden RU campus Thursday.

The injured newsmen were identified as staff reporter of Channel I Mostafa Mallick and its cameramen Moin Hasan and Masud, photojournalist of the daily Prothom Alo Azhar Uddin and Rajshahi correspondent of New Age Soumitra Majumder.

Of the injured, Azhar and Soumitra were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

A group of Chhatra League activists attacked the journalists when they were taking photographs of the beating of a university student by the supporters of the student wing of the ruling party at about 11:30am, the sources said.

Local journalist leaders condemned the incident and demanded punishment of those responsible.

Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League ransacked the office of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Solonga Bazar in Sirajganj yesterday following the issue of Rajshahi University.

Police said BCL men brought out a procession in the area at around 10:30am protesting the killing of RU student and BCL activist Faruk Hossain, reports our Sirajganj correspondent. 

At one stage, the attacked the Jamaat office and damaged its furniture. But, no one was injured in this incident. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
